Lesson 8: 〜上に

Usage:

Verb（Dictionary Form，Negative Form，Past Tense Form）+ 上に
i-Adj + 上に
na-Adj + な + 上に
Noun + である/の + 上に

Meaning:

「〜上（うえ）に」means “Not only…but also”.

Example Sentences:

（1）仕事でミスをした上に、財布もなくした。
I not only made a mistake at work，but also lost my wallet.

（2）彼はかっこいい上に、背も高い。
He is handsome and tall.

（3）彼は私に助言をしてくれた上にお金もくれた。
He gave me money as well as advice.

（4）彼は外科医である上に著名な作家であった。
Besides being a surgeon, he was a famous writer.

（5）彼は深刻な問題がある上に、ありとあらゆる型の人間を相手にしなければならなかった。
Besides those serious problems, he had to contend with all sorts of people.

（6）道に迷った上に、雨にまで降られた。
We lost our way, and what was worse, we were caught in a shower.

Note:

You can use 〜だけでなく too，they have the same meaning.

彼はかっこいいだけでなく、背も高い。
He is handsome and tall.

    1. Can we add は so it becomes ではなく ?

    2. Can we replace でなく with じゃなく ?

    3. Can we use している instead of する in this sentence?
    リサさんは日本語を勉強「している」上に、韓国語も勉強している。

    So 〜上に is a lot like ‘on top of 〜’, that makes it easier to remember.
