Lesson 4: 一方/一方で

Usage:

①Verb（Dictionary Form，Negative Form…）+一方/一方で
②i-Adj + 一方/一方で
③na-Adj + な/である + 一方/一方で
④Noun + の/である + 一方/一方で

Meaning:

「一方（いっぽう）/一方（いっぽう）で」means “on the other hand”.
You can use this to compare two aspects of someone/something, or compare two people/things in one aspect.

Example Sentences:

（1）彼は歌手である一方で、俳優としても有名だ。
He is a singer，on the other hand，he is a famous actor too.

（2）弟は背が高い一方で、兄は背が低い。
The young brother is tall，on the other hand，the elder brother is short.

（3）私は６０ページ読んだが、一方彼は１０ページしか読んでいない。
I have read sixty pages, while he has read only ten.

（4）田舎暮らしに憧れる男性がいる一方で、都会の方がいいという男性もいる。
Some men yearn to live in the countryside, while others prefer living in the city.

（5）トムさんは日本語が話せる一方で、中国語も話せる。
While Tom can speak Japanese, he can also speak Chinese.

（6）オンラインでの売り上げが上がる一方で、店舗での売り上げが落ちている。
While online sales are up, in-store sales are down.

（7）海外旅行は非日常を体験できることから、楽しいと感じることが多い一方で、不安なこともある。
Traveling abroad is often fun because it allows you to experience something out of the ordinary, but it can also make you feel anxious.

（8）リコーという会社はカメラを製造する一方で、医療機器の開発にも力を入れている。
While the company Ricoh manufactures cameras, it also focuses on the development of medical devices.

（9）彼はお金持ちである一方で、積極的にボランティアやチャリティーに参加する優しい人でもある。
Although he is rich, he is also a kind person who actively participates in volunteer work and charity work.

（10）彼は俳優である一方で、歌手としても活躍している。
While he is an actor, he is also active as a singer.
