Lesson 40: 〜たきり〜ない

Usage:

Past Tense Form of Verb + きり~ない


Meaning:

「~たきり~ない」means “never…”.
It’s used to express that things remain unchanged after something happened.

Example Sentences:

(1)彼は国を出たきり帰らない。
He left the country, never to return.

(2)彼は倒れたきり起きない。
He fell down, never to rise again.

(3)彼はそこに行ったきり2度と帰ってこなかった。
He went there, never to return.

(4)彼は3年前に家を出たきり全然消息がない。
He went away from home three years ago, and has never been heard of since.

(5)彼女は5年前に家を出たきりで、その後何の消息もありません。
She left home five years ago, and has never been heard of since.
