Lesson 2: 〜間に

Usage:

Verb（Dictionary Form, Negative Form）+ 間に
Te Form of Verb + いる + 間に
Noun + の + 間に

Meaning:

「〜間（あいだ）に」means “While…/during…”.

Example Sentences:

（1）私がゲームをしている間に、彼女は出かけました。
She went out while I was playing games.

（2）彼が寝ている間に、私はテレビをつけた。
I turned on TV while he was sleeping.

（3）東京にいる間に、彼女を知った。
While staying in Tokyo, I came to know her.

（4）彼は一ヶ月の間に３編の詩を書いた。
He composed three poems in a month.

（5）彼はジャングルに住んでいる間にマラリアにかかった。
He contracted malaria while living in the jungle.

（6）彼はアメリカにいる間に英語能力を伸ばした。
He developed his English skill while he was in America.

（7）彼が眠っている間に泥棒が入った。
A burglar broke in while he was asleep.

（8）日本に滞在した７年の間に、彼は日本語を熱心に勉強した。
During his seven years in Japan, he studied Japanese in earnest.

（9）昼寝をしている間に変な夢を見た。
While napping, I had a strange dream.

（10）先生が教えている間に、生徒は寝ていた。
While the teacher was teaching, the students slept.

Note:

Difference between 〜間 and 〜間に.

〜間:
〜間 is often used when you want to express that you do something for a long time while something is happening.You can not use momentary verb in the sentence.
For example:
彼が寝ている間、私は出かけた。✖️
I went out while he was sleeping.

彼が寝ている間、私はずっとゲームをしていた。✔️
I was playing games while he was sleeping.

〜間に:
〜間に is often used when you want to express that you did something （momentary action）while something is happening.
For example:
彼が寝ている間に、私はずっとゲームをしていた。✖️
I was playing games while he was sleeping.

彼が寝ている間に、私は出かけた。✔️
I went out while he was sleeping.
