Lesson 1: 〜間

Usage:

Verb（Dictionary Form, Negative Form）+ 間
Te Form of Verb + いる + 間
Noun + の + 間

Meaning:

「〜間（あいだ）」means “While…/during…”.

Example Sentences:

（1）私がいない間、彼女は家で本を読んでいた。
She was reading books while I was not home.

（2）彼が寝ている間、私はずっとゲームをしていた。
I was playing games while he was sleeping.

（3）夏休みの間、私はバイトをしていた。
I was doing part-time job during summer vacation.

（4）隣の人たちに、私たちが留守にしている間、犬の世話をしてくれるように頼みましょう。
Let’s ask the neighbors to look after the dog while we’re away.

（5）毎朝朝食をとっている間、彼の犬は彼をじっと見つめていた。
His dog stared at him every morning while he had his breakfast.

（6）田舎に滞在している間、私は楽しく過ごした。
I had a good time while I stayed in the country.

（7）待っている間、録音した音楽でも聞いて下さい。
You can enjoy some recorded music while you wait.

（8）彼はいつも眠っている間、窓を開けたままにしておく。
He always leaves the window open while he sleeps.

（9）彼が新聞を読んでいる間、彼の犬は側で横になっていた。
While he was reading a newspaper, his dog was lying beside him.

（10）私たちが外出している間、彼は犬の世話をした。
He looked after our dog while we were out.

Note:

This is often used when you want to express that you do something for a long time while something is happening.You can not use momentary verb in the sentence.（No worries, you will learn how to use momentary Verb in the next lesson ～間に.）
For example:

彼が寝ている間、私は出かけた。✖️
I went out while he was sleeping.

彼が寝ている間、私はずっとゲームをしていた。✔️
I was playing games while he was sleeping.
