Lesson 1: 〜間


Verb(Dictionary Form, Negative Form)+ 間
Te Form of Verb + いる + 間
Noun + の + 間


「〜間(あいだ)」means “While…/during…”.

Example Sentences:

She was reading books while I was not home.

I was playing games while he was sleeping.

I was doing part-time job during summer vacation.

Let’s ask the neighbors to look after the dog while we’re away.

His dog stared at him every morning while he had his breakfast.

I had a good time while I stayed in the country.

You can enjoy some recorded music while you wait.

He always leaves the window open while he sleeps.

While he was reading a newspaper, his dog was lying beside him.

He looked after our dog while we were out.


This is often used when you want to express that you do something for a long time while something is happening.You can not use momentary verb in the sentence.(No worries, you will learn how to use momentary Verb in the next lesson ~間に.)
For example:

I went out while he was sleeping.

I was playing games while he was sleeping.
