Usage:

Noun + というのは/とは

Meaning:

「〜というのは/とは」is used to give a definition of a word.

Example Sentences:

（1）天気予報官というのはお天気の方で必ずしも同意をしない人のことだ。
A weatherman is someone with whom the weather does not always agree.

（2）正直というのは一つの美徳だ。
Honesty is a virtue.

（3）条約というのは、いわば、国家間の契約である。
A treaty is, as it were, a contract between countries.

（4）美というのは、見る人の目の中でのことだ。
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

（5）ジムというのはジェームスを短くしたものだ。
Jim is short for James.

（6）東大とは東京大学のことだ。
UT is the University of Tokyo.

（7）JLPTとは日本語能力試験のことだ。
JLPT is Japanese-Language Proficiency Test.

（8）誕生日とは人が生まれた日のことだ。
The birthday is the day on which a person was born.

（9）ジェントルマンとは独立した財産のある人のことだ。
A gentleman is a man of independent means.

（10）「Ｕ．Ｆ．Ｏとは何を表しているの」「未確認飛行物体のことだと思う」
“What does U.F.O. stand for?” “It means Unidentified Flying Object, I guess.”
