Lesson 20: 〜くせに

Usage:

Verb(Dictionary Form, Past Tense Form, Negative Form…) + くせに
Te Form of Verb + いる + くせに
i-Adj + くせに
na-Adj + な + くせに
Noun + の +  くせに

Meaning:

「～くせに」means “Even though…”.

Example Sentences:

（1）彼はなんでもできるくせに、何もしないなんて、信じられない。
I can’t believe that he did nothing even though he can do anything.

（2）彼はギターを弾けないくせに、弾けるふりをする。
Even though he can’t play the guitar, he pretends that he can.

（3）知っているくせに、なんで教えてくれないの。
Why don’t you tell me even though you know it?

（4）彼女はかわいいくせに、自信がないです。
She is not confident even though she is cute.

（5）彼女は元気なくせに、病気のふりをしている。
Even though she’s fine, she’s pretending to be sick.

（6）子供のくせに、生意気ね。
Even though he is a kid, he is so bossy.

（7）彼は太っているくせに声は細い。
His voice is thin even though he is fat.

（8）彼は金持ちのくせに乞食のような生活をしている。
He is rich yet he lives like a beggar.

（9）新米のくせに大きな顔をするな。
Act your place.

（10）警官のくせに泥棒を怖がるなんて。
Even though he’s a policeman, he’s afraid of thieves.

Notes:

（1）It’s often used to complain about something.
（2）The subject should be human being.

    I know that (な)のに means despite but I have trouble seeing the difference between that and くせに

    彼はゲームをやったくせに、なにも教えてくれなかった。

    彼女は宿題があるのは教えたくせに、どうしてまだできていないの。

    彼は何もしないくせに、文句を言うばかりだ。

    もう怪しいくせに、どうしてもっと怪しくなろうとしたんですか。

    彼はまじめなくせに、なんでばかにしているんですか。

    もう大人のくせに、まだ子供らしくしています。いい加減しなさい。
