Lesson 33: 〜さえ〜ば

Usage:

①Polite Form of Verb(drop the ます in the end) + さえ + すれば/しなければ
②i-Adj (drop the い in the end) + く + さえ + あれば/なければ
③na-Adj + で + さえ + あれば/なければ
④Noun + さえ + あれば/なければ/すれば/しなければ

Meaning:

「～さえ～ば」means “as long as…”.

Example Sentences:

（1）彼は自分さえよければいいと思っている。
He is self-centered.(He thinks it is okay as long as he is okay).

（2）静かでさえあれば、狭くてもいい。
It can be narrow as long as it’s quiet.

（3）天気さえ良ければ行きます。
I will go, provided the weather is clear.

（4）当店のすべてのカタログは求めさえすれば無料で差し上げます。
All our catalogues are free for the asking.

（5）地図さえあれば、君に道を教えてあげられるのに。
If only I had a map, I could show you the way.

（6）知ってさえいれば、知っている限りお話しするのですが……。
If only I knew, I would tell you all that I knew.

（7）大事に扱ってくれさえすれば、私のカメラを貸してあげよう。
You may only borrow my camera if you are careful with it.

（8）走りさえすれば、どんな車でもよいのです。
Any car will do, as long as it runs.

（9）赤くさえあれば、どんな花でも結構です。
Any flower will do, so long as it is red.

（10）静かにしてさえいればここにいてもよろしい。
You may stay here as long as you keep quiet.
