Lesson 26: 〜ことに

Usage:

Past Tense Form of Verb + ことに
i-Adj + ことに
na-Adj + な + ことに

Meaning:

「～ことに」means “To my…”,”……ly, …”.

Example Sentences:

（1）驚いたことに、あの子はもう大学のコースも独学で終了したそうです。
To my surprise, it seems that that kid has finished college courses all by himself.

（2）嬉しいことに、娘が試験に合格した。
To my joy, my daughter passed the exam.

（3）幸いなことに、やっと自分の好きな人と結婚できました。
Fortunately, I finally married the person I love.

（4）彼の父がたいへんがっかりしたことに、彼のその計画は失敗した。
He failed in the scheme, much to the disappointment of his father.

（5）彼が驚いたことに、列車は急に止まった。
To his surprise, the train made a quick stop.

（6）私たちが驚いたことに、ベティがトロフィーを獲得した。
To our surprise, Betty won the trophy.

（7）私がほっとしたことに、彼は病気から回復した。
To my relief he recovered from his illness.

（8）残念なことに、あなたの招待に応じられない。
To my regret I cannot accept your invitation.

（9）幸いなことに、息子は新しい学校での生活にすぐに慣れた。
Fortunately, my son quickly adjusted to life in his new school.

（10）驚いたことに、彼女はとても上手に英語を話した。
To my surprise, she spoke English very well.
