Lesson 77: 〜というほどではない/というほどでもない

Usage:

Verb/Adjective/Noun + というほどではない/というほどでもない

Meaning:

「〜というほどではない/というほどでもない」is used to express that the degree is not that high.

Example Sentences:

（1）日本語を勉強したことはあるが、小説が読めるというほどではない。
I have learned Japanese before, but my Japanese is not good enough to read novels.

（2）ちょっと辛いが、食べられないというほどでもない。
It’s a little bit spicy, but it’s not so spicy that I can’t eat.

（3）その女の子はひどく不美人というほどではなかった。
The girl was not downright homely.

（4）研究というほどでもない。素人の道楽ですよ、おはずかしい。
It can hardly be called research… just an amateur’s hobby, I’m ashamed to say.

（5）友達というほどではないが知り合いだ。
He is not a friend, but an acquaintance.
