Usage:
①Verb(Dictionary Form, Past Tense Form, Negative Form) + せいで/せいだ/せいか
②Te Form of Verb + いる/いた + せいで/せいだ/せいか
③i-Adj + せいで/せいだ/せいか
④na-Adj + な + せいで/せいだ/せいか
⑤Noun + の + せいで/せいだ/せいか
Meaning:
「~せいで/せいだ/せいか」means “because…”. It’s often used to blame someone/something or to express your disappointment. |
Example Sentences:
(1)彼のせいで私たちは負けました。 We lost because of him. (2)慣れない靴で散歩したせいで足が痛い。 My feet hurt because I took a walk wearing shoes that I’m not used to wearing. (3)彼は不注意のせいで、足の骨を折った。 His carelessness cost him a broken leg. (4)彼は年のせいで目が見えなくなった。 Age deprived him of his sight. (5)彼は自分の敗因を私のせいだと責めた。 He accused me of his defeat. (6)彼の失敗は大部分不注意のせいだった。 His failure was mainly due to carelessness. (7)交渉が失敗したのは彼のせいだ。 I blame him for our failure in the negotiations. (8)神経を使ったせいか胃が痛いです。 I have a nervous stomach. (9)飛行機でお酒飲むと、気圧のせいか酔いやすい。 Maybe it’s the low air pressure that means you get drunk more easily on planes. (10)餃子を家で作りましたが、皮が少なかったせいか、具が少し余ってしまいました。 I made some gyoza at home but, possibly because I didn’t have enough dough, I had some of the filling left over. |
Notes:
①~せいか is often used to say some reasons that you are uncertain. ②~を~せいにする is often used to blame someone while it’s not his fault. 自分の失敗を人のせいにするな。 Don’t blame other people for your mistakes! |
