Lesson 29: 〜ことになる

Usage 1:

Dictionary Form of Verb + ことになる
Negative Form of Verb + ことになる

Meaning of Usage 1:

「～ことになる」 is used to express the decision by others.

Example Sentences of Usage 1:

（1）我々は妥協することになった。
We arrived at a compromise.

（2）彼女は結局彼と結婚することになった。
She ended up getting married to him.

（3）来月から帰国することになりました。
I have to go back to my country next month.

（4）日本に行かないことになりました。
I can’t go to Japan.

（5）友人の結婚式にアカペラで歌うことになりました。
I’m going to be singing a cappella at a friend’s wedding ceremony.

Usage 2:

Verb(Dictionary Form, Negative Form, …) + (という)ことになる
Noun + ということになる

Meaning of Usage 2:

「～ことになる」means “in other words…”.

Example Sentences of Usage 2:

（1）家賃は一ヶ月五万円だから、一年で六十万円も払うことになる。
The rent is fifty thousand yen every month, in other words, I have to pay six hundred thousand yen every year.

（2）彼女はおじの娘だから、私と彼女はいとこ同士ということになる。
She is my uncle’s daughter, in other words, we are cousins.

（3）彼が無実なら、当然彼の妻が有罪ということになる。
If he is innocent, it follows that his wife is guilty.
