Lesson 7: 〜ておく/とく

Usage:

①Te Form of Verb + おく
②Te Form of Verb(drop the て in the end)+とく


Meaning:

「〜ておく/とく」means “do something in advance”; “leave something undone”.

Example Sentences:

これ、冷蔵れいぞうておくよ。
I’ll put this in the fridge.

そのきょうくんおぼておく価値かちがある。
It is worthwhile remembering the moral.

明日あしたまでにておく必要ひつようがある。
I need to know by tomorrow.

まさかのときそなておくのは賢明けんめいだ。
It is wise to provide against a rainy day.

レポートをまえに、りょうあつておく
I will collect the document in advance before I write the report.

Note:

とく is often used in conversation.

かんがとくよ。
I’ll think about it.

やくとくね。
I’ll make a reservation.

さきあやまとくね。
I’ll apologize first.

やっぱり、やめとく
Maybe next time.

パーティーのじゅんとくよ。
I’ll see to the arrangements for the party.
