Lesson 58: 〜ではなく/ではなくて

Usage:

Something you want to negate + ではなく/ではなくて + …+ （の/ん）だ

Meaning:

「〜ではなく/ではなくて」 means “Not…”.

Note:
①You can use じゃなく/じゃなくて in spoken Japanese.
②（の/ん）is used to emphasize what you said.

Example Sentences:

悪わるいのは君きみではなく僕ぼくだ。
It is not you but I that am to blame.

彼女かのじょは医い者しゃではなく教きょう師しだ。
She is not a doctor, but a teacher.

彼かれは電車でんしゃではなく車くるまで来きた。
He came by car, not by train.

彼女かのじょは月げっ給きゅうではなく日にっ給きゅうをもらっている。
She does not get paid by the month, but by the day.

美うつくしいものが高こう価かなのではなくて、高こう価かなものが美うつくしいのだ。
It’s not beautiful things that are expensive, but expensive things that are beautiful.

私わたしはその仕し事ごとが嫌きらいだからではなくて、それに向むかないからだ。
Not that I dislike the job, but that I am unfit for it.

人ひとは食たべるために生いきるのじゃなくて生いきるために食たべるのだ。
People do not live to eat but eat to live.

私わたしが必要ひつようとしているのは、お金かねじゃなくてあなたの助言じょげんなのです。
What I need is not money, but your advice.

大切たいせつなのはどの大学だいがくを出でたかではなくて、大学だいがくで何なにを学まなんだかである。
What is important is not which university you’ve graduated from but what you’ve learned in the university.

彼かれが戻もどってきたのはホームシックのせいじゃなくて、財さい布ふが軽かるくなったからだ。
He came back not because he was homesick, but because he was running short of money.
