Lesson 57: 〜（よ）うとする

Usage:

Volitional Form of Verb + とする

Meaning:

「〜（よ）うとする」means “try to do something”.

Example Sentences:

僕ぼくは口論こうろんを避さけようとする。
I try to avoid arguments.

私わたしは逃にげようとした。
I tried to escape.

何なんで直なおそうとしないの？
Why don’t you try to fix it?

家いえを買かおうとする人ひとがたくさんいる。
There are a lot of persons who try to buy a house.

一いち度どに２ふたつのことをしようとするな。
Don’t try to do two things at a time.

僕ぼくらはトムを慰なぐさめようとするべきだ。
We should try to comfort Tom.

彼かれは自じ分ぶんの思おもい通とおりにしようとする。
He will try to have his own way.

言げん語ご学がくは言げん語ごを記き述じゅつしようとする学問がくもんである。
Linguistics is a science that tries to describe language.

彼かれらがそうしようとするのは単たんにわがままからではない。
They have a less selfish reason for trying it.

私わたしたちは彼かれの言いおうとする意味いみをつかむことができなかった。
We couldn’t grasp the meaning of what he was trying to say.
