Lesson 46: 〜はずだ/はずがない

Usage:

①Verb(Dictionary Form, Past Tense Form, Negative Form…) + はずだ/はずがない
②i-Adj + はずだ/はずがない
③na-Adj + な + はずだ/はずがない
④Noun + の + はずだ/はずがない


Meaning:

「〜はずだ」is used to express that you think something should happen.
「〜はずがない」is used to express that you think something shouldn’t happen.

Note:
①「〜はずです」 is the polite form of 「〜はずだ」.
②「〜はずがありません」 is the polite form of 「〜はずがない」.

Example Sentences:

トムはてるはずだ
Tom ought to be able to win.

それでだいじょうはずだ
That should do the trick.

かれはもういてるはずだ
He should have arrived by now.

あなたならわかるはずです
I think you know what I mean.

かれはまだ学生がくせいはずです
I think he is a student.

かれはこんなによわはずがない
He can’t be so weak.

えい簡単かんたんはずがない
I don’t think English is easy.

彼女かのじょ約束やくそくやぶったはずがない
She can’t have broken her promise.

彼女かのじょがそんなことをしたはずがありません
She can’t have done such a thing.

これは本物ほんもののダイヤであるはずがありません
This can’t be a real diamond.
