Lesson 47: （もし）〜たら

Usage:

(もし) + Past Tense Form of Verb + ら
(もし) + i-Adj (delete the い in the end) + かった + ら
(もし) + na-Adj + だった + ら
(もし) + Noun + だった + ら

Meaning 1:

If…
(Often used in one single action.)

Examples of Meaning 1:

私わたしが断ことわったらどうする？
What if I say no?

つまんなかったら帰かえる。
If it gets boring, I will go home.

眠ねむくなったら言いってね。
If you get sleepy, tell me.

もし何なにかあったら電でん話わするよ。
If anything happens, I’ll give you a call.

遅おそくなったら叱しかられちゃう。
If I’m late, I’ll be scolded.

あした雨あめが降ふったら、試し合あいは中ちゅう止しします。
The game will be called off if it rains tomorrow.

もし暑あつかったら、エアコンをつけてください。
If it’s hot, please turn on the air conditioner.

あした晴はれだったら、ドライブに行いきましょう。
If it’s sunny tomorrow, let’s go for a drive.

もし暇ひまだったら、遊あそびに来きませんか。
If you have time, why don’t you come visit me?

Meaning 2:

To express that something surprised you or something you are unexpected.
You can translate it to “I fount that…”.

Examples of Meaning 2:

部屋へやに入はいったら誰だれもいないだった。
I found that there was no one when I came in the room.

カバンを開あけたら空からっぽだった。
I found that the bag was empty when I opened it.

学校がっこうに行いったら、新しん入にゅう生せいがたくさんいました。
I found that there were a lot of new students when I went to school.

箱はこを開あけたら、プレゼントが入はいっていた。
I found that there was a present when I opened the box.

彼かれは見みた目めが怖こわいが、話はなしてみたら、意い外がいに良いい人ひとだった。
He looks scary, but when I talk to him, he’s a surprisingly good person.

デパートに行いったら、休やすみだった。
When I went to the department store, I found that it was closed because of the holiday.

外そとに出でたら、一面いちめんの銀ぎん世せ界かいでした。
When I went outside, I found that it was a silver world.

買かい物ものをしていたら、クラスメートのトムさんに会あった。
When I was shopping, I met my classmate Tom.
