(もし)~たら

In this lesson, I will teach you how to use the grammar rule (もし)~たら.

Usage:

(もし) + Past Tense Form of Verb + ら
(もし) + i-Adj (delete the い in the end) + かった + ら
(もし) + na-Adj + だった + ら
(もし) + Noun + だった + ら

Meaning 1:

If…
(Often used in one single action.)

Examples of Meaning 1:

あしたあめたらあいちゅうします。
The game will be called off if it rains tomorrow.

あつかったら、エアコンをつけてください。
If it’s hot, please turn on the air conditioner.

あしたれだったら、ドライブにきましょう。
If it’s sunny tomorrow, let’s go for a drive.

ひまだったらあそびにませんか。
If you have time, why don’t you come visit me?

Meaning 2:

To express that something surprised you or something you are unexpected.
You can translate it to “I fount that…”

Examples of Meaning 2:

部屋へやはいたらだれもいないだった。
I found that there was no one when I came in the room.
 
カバンをたらからっぽだった。
I found that the bag was empty when I opened it.
