Lesson 19: 〜てはいけない

Usage:

Te Form of Verb + wa + いけない


Meaning:

「〜てはいけない」means “don’t…”, “mustn’t…”, “shouldn’t…”, “can’t…”.
You use ~てはいけない when you don’t want your subordinates or your friends to do something.
Don’t use it to your superior, it’s not respectful enough.

Note:
①「〜てはいけません」is the polite form of 「〜てはいけない」.
②「は」in「〜てはいけない」is pronounced as “wa”.

Example Sentences:

さわてはいけない
You can’t touch the paintings.

かれ信用しんようてはいけない
You shouldn’t trust him.

にん軽蔑けいべつてはいけない
Don’t look down on others.

こう混同こんどうてはいけない
You should not confuse business with personal affairs.

学校がっこうこくてはいけない
You must not be late for school.

あきらてはいけません
Don’t give up!

部屋へやてはいけません
Don’t leave the room.

がってはいけません
Don’t stand up.

ちがいをおそてはいけません
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes.

つうかるてはいけません
Don’t make light of a headache.
