Lesson 19: 〜てはいけない

Usage:

Te Form of Verb + はwa + いけない

Meaning:

「〜てはいけない」means “don’t…”, “mustn’t…”, “shouldn’t…”, “can’t…”.
You use ～てはいけない when you don’t want your subordinates or your friends to do something.
Don’t use it to your superior, it’s not respectful enough.

Note:
①「〜てはいけません」is the polite form of 「〜てはいけない」.
②「は」in「〜てはいけない」is pronounced as “wa”.

Example Sentences:

絵えに触さわってはいけない。
You can’t touch the paintings.

彼かれを信用しんようしてはいけない。
You shouldn’t trust him.

他た人にんを軽蔑けいべつしてはいけない。
Don’t look down on others.

公こう私しを混同こんどうしてはいけない。
You should not confuse business with personal affairs.

学校がっこうに遅ち刻こくしてはいけない。
You must not be late for school.

諦あきらめてはいけません。
Don’t give up!

部屋へやを出でてはいけません。
Don’t leave the room.

立たち上あがってはいけません。
Don’t stand up.

間ま違ちがいを恐おそれてはいけません。
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes.

頭ず痛つうを軽かるく見みてはいけません。
Don’t make light of a headache.
