Lesson 90: 〜ないまでも

Usage:

Negative Form of Verb + までも

Meaning:

「～ないまでも」is a grammar rule used to compare two things, it need to be a degree of the latter even though it can not be at a degree of the former.

Examples:

プロのように上手に弾けないまでも、簡単な曲なら弾けます。
Even if I can’t play as well as a professional, I can play simple songs.
Puro no you ni jouzu ni hikenai made mo, kantan na kyoku nara hikemasu.

毎日勉強しないまでも、週に何回かは復習したほうがいい。
Even if you don’t study every day, it’s better to review a few times a week.
Mainichi benkyou shinai made mo, shuu ni nankai ka wa fukushuu shita hou ga ii.

富士山に登れないまでも、近くで見るだけでも感動します。
Even if you can’t climb Mt. Fuji, just seeing it up close is moving.
Fujisan ni noborenai made mo, chikaku de miru dake demo kandou shimasu.

流暢に話せないまでも、意思を伝えることはできます。
Even if I can’t speak fluently, I can still get my point across.
Ryuuchou ni hanasenai made mo, ishi o tsutaeru koto wa dekimasu.

彼ほど強くないまでも、それなりに戦えると思います。
Even if I’m not as strong as him, I think I can still put up a fight.
Kare hodo tsuyokunai made mo, sorenari ni tatakaeru to omoimasu.

完璧に覚えていないまでも、大体の内容は理解しています。
Even if I haven’t memorized it perfectly, I understand the general content.
Kanpeki ni oboete inai made mo, daitai no naiyou wa rikai shiteimasu.

大成功とは言えないまでも、悪くない結果だった。
Even if it wasn’t a huge success, the result wasn’t bad.
Dai seikou to wa ienai made mo, warukunai kekka datta.

一流ホテルには泊まれないまでも、清潔な宿には泊まりたい。
Even if I can’t stay at a luxury hotel, I’d like to stay somewhere clean.
Ichiryuu hoteru ni wa tomarenai made mo, seiketsu na yado ni wa tomaritai.

留学はできないまでも、短期研修には参加したいです。
Even if I can’t study abroad, I want to participate in a short-term program.
Ryuugaku wa dekinai made mo, tanki kenshuu ni wa sanka shitai desu.

全部理解できないまでも、要点だけでも掴みたい。
Even if I can’t understand everything, I want to grasp at least the main points.
Zenbu rikai dekinai made mo, youten dake demo tsukamitai.
