Lesson 85: 〜ともあろうものが

Usage:

Noun + ともあろうものが


Meaning:

「~ともあろうものが」means “I can’t believe that…”.
It’s a grammar rule used to state that a person in a certain profession or position did something bad.

Note:
It’s usually used with せい警察官けいさつかんべん護士ごしきょうしゃ.

Examples:

警察官けいさつかんともあろうものが、強盗ごうとうはたらくとは。
I can’t believe that he/she robbed someone even though he/she is a policeman/policewoman.
 
べんともあろうものが、らいしゃかねおうりょうするとは。
I can’t believe that he/she embezzled the client’s money even though he/she is a lawyer.
