Usage:

①Verb(Dictionary Form, Past Tense Form, Negative Form) + とは/なんて
②Te Form of Verb + いる + とは/なんて
③i-Adj + とは/なんて
④na-Adj + とは/なんて
⑤Noun + とは/なんて
Meaning:
「~とは/なんて」means “I can’t believe that…”. |
Examples:
普段はおとなしい彼があんなに怒るとは、よほどひどいことを言われたのだろう。 I can’t believe that he was angry like that as he is a quiet person. It seems that someone said very awful things to him. 20歳にもなって、そんな簡単なこともできないなんて。 I can’t believe that he is unable to do something easy like that even he is 20 years old. |
