Usage:

Verb(Dictionary Form, Past Tense Form, Negative Form) + とは/なんて

Te Form of Verb + いる + とは/なんて

イ-Adjective + とは/なんて

ナ-Adjective + とは/なんて

Noun + とは/なんて

 

Meaning:

I can’t believe that…

 

Examples:

だんはおとなしいかれがあんなにおこるとは、よほどひどいことをわれたのだろう。

I can’t believe that he was angry like that as he is a quiet person. It seems that someone said very awful things to him.

 

20歳はたちにもなって、そんな簡単かんたんなこともできないなんて。

I can’t believe that he is unable to do something easy like that even he is 20 years old.
