In Japanese,単 means “single”.

How to read it:

Kunyomi: Not often used
Onyomi:たん

Onyomi:
単独(たんどく)→alone
簡単(かんたん)→easy

Origin:

You can see a weapon. It’s a weapon that for a single person.
So 単 means “single”.
