Meaning

In Japanese,練 means “to practice”.

How to read it:

Kunyomi:ね
Onyomi:れん

戦略(せんりゃく)を練(ね)る→to devise a strategy
 
Onyomi:
練習(れんしゅう)する→to practice

Origin:

It’s hard to remember this kanji by the origin. However, I will think of a way to help you.
練 = 糸 + 東
糸 means “thread” and  the original meaning of 東 is “bag”.
