Lesson 53: 〜(の)ではあるまいか

Usage:

Verb(Dictionary Form, Past Tense Form) + のではあるまいか
Te Form of Verb + いる + のではあるまいか
i-Adj + のではあるまいか
na-Adj + ではあるまいか
Noun + ではあるまいか


Meaning:

「〜(の)ではあるまいか」means “Isn’t it. . .?”.
It’s often used in written Japanese, more formal than 「〜のではないか」.

Examples:

かれ最初さいしょからなにもかもぜんわかっていたのではあるまいか。
Isn’t he knowing everything from the beginning?

いま若者わかものたちはにんおもいやるこころうしないつつあるのではあるまいか。
Aren’t young people losing the heart to care for others?
