Usage 1:

Past Tense Form of Verb + (か)とおもうと/(か)とおもったら


Meaning of Usage 1:

「〜(か)と思うと/(か)と思ったら」means “as soon as…”.
It’s used to express that the two things happens almost in the same time.

Examples of Usage 1:

かれかけたかとおもうとすぐわすものりにかえってくる。
He went back to get what he forgot as soon as he went out.

あかちゃんは、いていたかとおもったら、もうわらっている。
The baby begins to laugh as soon as he cries.

Usage 2:

Verb(Dictionary Form, Past Tense Form) + (か)とおもうと/(か)とおもったら


Meaning of Usage 2:

「〜(か)と思うと/(か)と思ったら」means “I think that… but…”.
It’s used to express that something is against what you are thinking about.

Examples of Usage 2:

いもうとは、いまべんきょうはじめたかとおもうと、もう居間いまでテレビをている。
I think my sister has just started studying, but she is already watching TV in the living room.

やっとごとわったとおもったら、またあたらしいごとたのまれた。
I thought that my work was over, but new work came again.
