Lesson 47: 〜つつ（も）

Usage 1:

Polite Form of Verb(drop the ます in the end) + つつ

Meaning of Usage 1:

「〜つつ」means “doing something while doing another thing in the same time”.
It’s more formal than 「〜ながら」.

Examples of Usage 1:

辞じ書しょを引ひきつつ英えい字じ新聞しんぶんを読よんでいる。
I read an English newspaper while looking up a dictionary.

資し金きんのことを考かんがえつつ、工こう事じを進すすめていく。
We will proceed with the construction while considering the funds.

Usage 2:

Polite Form of Verb(drop the ます in the end) + つつ（も）

Meaning of Usage 2:

「〜つつ（も）」means “Although…”.

Examples of Usage 2:

もう起おきなければと思おもいつつも、なかなか起おきられない。
I can’t get up although I think I need to get up.

タバコは体からだに悪わるいと知しりつつも、つい吸すってしまう。
I can’t help but smoking although I know it’s harmful to health.
