Usage 1:
Polite Form of Verb(drop the ます in the end) + つつ
Meaning of Usage 1:
「〜つつ」means “doing something while doing another thing in the same time”. It’s more formal than 「〜ながら」. |
Examples of Usage 1:
辞書を引きつつ英字新聞を読んでいる。 I read an English newspaper while looking up a dictionary. 資金のことを考えつつ、工事を進めていく。 We will proceed with the construction while considering the funds. |

Meaning of Usage 2:
「〜つつ(も)」means “Although…”. |
Examples of Usage 2:
もう起きなければと思いつつも、なかなか起きられない。 I can’t get up although I think I need to get up. タバコは体に悪いと知りつつも、つい吸ってしまう。 I can’t help but smoking although I know it’s harmful to health. |
