Usage 1:

とても + Positive Expression

Meaning of Usage 1:

「とても + Positive Expression」 means “very…; really…”.

Example Sentences of Usage 1:

とても高たかい。
It’s very high. / It’s very expensive.

今いまとても眠ねむい。
I’m very sleepy now.

とてもいいよ。
It’s very good.

とても疲つかれた。
I’m really tired.

とても好すきです。
I like it very much.

彼かれはとても親切しんせつだ！
He’s really nice!

とても感動かんどうしました。
I was very impressed.

Usage 2:

とても + Negative Expression

Meaning of Usage 2:

「とても + Negative Expression」means “No matter how hard I tried, I still can not…”

Example Sentences of Usage 2:

そんなひどいことはとてもできない。
I can’t do such a terrible thing.

彼女かのじょがせっかく作つくってくれた料りょう理りをまずいだなんて、とても言いえない。
It’s hard to say that she made a bad meal.

僕ぼくは恥はずかしがり屋やだ。彼女かのじょに話はなしかけるなんて、とてもできない。
I’m shy. I can’t really talk to her.

タイ料りょう理りは僕ぼくには辛からすぎて、とても食たべられない。
Thai food is too spicy for me and I can’t eat it very much.

とても三さん人にんの子こ供どものお母かあさんには見みえないです。
It’s hard to believe you are a mother of three.
