Lesson 18: もう〜

Usage 1:

もう + Past Tense Form of Verb


Meaning:

「もう〜」means “already…”.

Example Sentences of Usage 1:

かれもうかえりました。
He was already home.

わたしもうべた。
I already ate.

トムはもうた?
Has Tom arrived already?

もう宿しゅくだいした?
Have you handed in your homework already?

わたしもう着替きがえたよ。
I have already changed my clothes.

Usage 2:

もう + Negative Expression


Meaning 1 of Usage 2:

There is no more … / no longer

Example Sentences of Usage 2 – Meaning 1:

もうしおがない。
There is no more salt.

牛乳ぎゅうにゅうもうありません。
There is no more milk.

もういたみはないですか?
Are you no longer in pain?

あたまもういたくないです。
My head doesn’t ache anymore.

パソコンをったので、もうかねがありません。
I don’t have more money because I bought a personal computer.

Meaning 2 of Usage 2:

I will never … again
I won’t … anymore

Example Sentences of Usage 2 – Meaning 2:

わたしもうかれいたいとはおもわない。
I don’t want to see him again.

タバコはもういません.
I will never smoke again.

もうわけなんかきたくないね。
I don’t want to hear any more excuses.

学校がっこうにはもう二度にどきたくない。
I don’t want to go to school anymore.

ギャンブルはもうやらない。
I don’t gamble anymore.
