Lesson 33: やっと～

Usage:

やっと + Past Tense Form of Verb
やっと + Potential Form of Verb
やっと + Dictionary Form of Verb

Meaning:

「やっと〜」means “Finally…”.
やっと + Past Tense Form of Verb:
Meaning: You finally did something (the action has already happened).
Example:
やっと終わった。→ It finally ended.

やっと + Potential Form of Verb:
Meaning: You can finally do something (the action hasn’t happened yet, but you now have the ability or the conditions to do it) → emphasizes ability or conditions.
Example:
やっと行ける。→ I can finally go.

やっと + Dictionary Form of Verb:
Meaning: The action is finally going to happen → emphasizes that the action is about to occur, which may have nothing to do with your ability or conditions (even if you don’t have the ability or conditions, the event will still happen).
Examples:
やっと雨が止む。→ The rain is finally stopping.
やっと電車が来る。→ The train is finally coming.

Example Sentences:

私わたしはやっと川かわを渡わたった。
I finally got across the river.

やっと二人ふたりになれたね。
We’re finally alone.

やっと自じ由ゆうになったよ。
We are finally free.

やっと免許めんきょが取とれました。
I finally got a driver’s license.

やっと読める。
I can finally read it.
Yatto yomeru.

やっと泳げる。
I can finally swim.
Yatto oyogeru.

やっと漢字が書ける。
I can finally write kanji.
Yatto kanji ga kakeru.

やっと電車が来る。
The train is finally coming.
Yatto densha ga kuru.

やっと雨が止む。
The rain is finally stopping.
Yatto ame ga yamu.

やっと試合が始まる。
The match is finally starting.
Yatto shiai ga hajimaru.

      止む→止んだ（やんだ）
      雨が止んだ→ the rain stopped.
