Lesson 20: 〜ほうが

Usage:

①Past Tense Form of Verb + ほうが + …
②Negative Form of Verb + ほうが + …

Meaning:

①You use 「〜ほうが/〜ないほうが」 when you want to give some advice.
②「〜ほうが」 means “You’d better…; You should…”.
③「〜ないほうが」means “You’d better not…; You shouldn’t…”.

Example Sentences:

寝ねたほうがいいよ。
You’d better go to sleep.

早はや起おきしたほうがいい。
You’d better get up early.

禁酒きんしゅしたほうがいいよ。
You should give up drinking.

捨すてたほうがいいですよ。
You should throw these out.

誰だれかに相談そうだんしたほうがいい。
You should talk to someone.

レタスは洗あらったほうがいいの？
Should I wash the lettuce?

君きみは行いかないほうがいい。
You’d better not go.

それをしないほうがいいよ！
You better not do that!

外がい出しゅつしないほうがいいよ。
You’d better not go out.

1人ひとりで行いかないほうがいいよ。
You should not go alone.

他た人にんのことに干かん渉しょうしないほうがいいよ。
You shouldn’t interfere in other people’s business.

今日きょうは私わたしのおじいちゃんに会あわないほうがいいですよ。
You shouldn’t visit my grandfather today.

Note:

Usually，「いい」 is used after the 「ほうが」.
But you can use other words too. (For example, 賢明けんめい)

何も言わないほうが賢明だ。
It would be wiser not to say anything.
Nani mo iwanai hou ga kenmei da.

健康のために運動したほうが望ましいです。
For your health, it’s desirable to exercise.
Kenkou no tame ni undou shita hou ga nozomashii desu.

重要な書類は安全に保管したほうが理想的です。
It’s ideal to store important documents safely.
Jyuuyou na shorui wa anzen ni hokan shita hou ga risouteki desu.
