Lesson 26: 〜ほかに(は)

Usage:

Noun + の + ほかに(は)


Meaning:

「Noun + の + ほかに(は)」means
(1)「Noun + の + ほかに(は)」 + Positive Expression:”…besides Noun; …as well as Noun; …in addition to”.
(2)「Noun + の + ほかに(は)」 + Negative Expression:…but Noun

Please note that ほか can be also written as ほか. The difference is that ほか is more formal than ほか.

Example Sentences:

ぺんほかなに必要ひつようですか。
What do you need besides a pen?

きゅうほかには、テニスもできます。
I can also play tennis besides baseball.

ここにはこうほかなにもありません。
There was nothing here but remote wilderness.

きりほかなにえなかった。
We could see nothing but fog.

ピアノほかなにがっやってる?
Do you play any other instruments besides the piano?

トムはえいほかドイツはなせる。
Tom can speak German as well as English.

わたしのほかにはだれかなかった。
Nobody went but me.

きみのほかにたよひとがいない.
I have no one but you to turn to for help.

ここにはわたしのほかにだれもいない。
There’s no one but me here.
