Lesson 16: 〜ている

Usage:

Te Form of Verb + いる/います

Note: 「〜ています」 is the Polite Form of 「ている」.


Meaning 1:

「〜ている」 means that “someone is doing something now”.

Example Sentences of Meaning 1:

かれはなています
He is talking.

ているの?
Are you crying?

いぬている
The dog is barking.

彼女かのじょくるまています
She is sleeping in the car.

わたしかぎさがています
I’m looking for my key.

Meaning 2:

「〜ている」 means that “someone do something usually (as a hobby or something)”.

Example Sentences of Meaning 2:

なにかスポーツをしていますか。
Are you playing any sports?

やすみのはテレビをています
I watch TV on my days off.

毎朝まいあさあさはんています
I eat breakfast every morning.

毎晩まいばんははでんています
I call my mother every night.

毎日まいにちみがています
I brush my teeth every day.

Meaning 3:

「〜ている」 can be used to describe current state.

Example Sentences of Meaning 3:

いまつかています
I am tired now.

せきているよ。
The seat is open.

わたしには2人ふたりまいがいて,2人ふたりとも結婚けっこんています
I have two sisters and both are married.

彼女かのじょわたしに、おなかがすいているとささやいた。
She whispered to me that she was hungry.

はながつまっています
My nose is stuffed up.
