Meaning

In Japanese, 薬 means “medicine”.

Kunyomi:くすり
Onyomi:やく

Kunyomi:
薬(くすり)を飲(の)む→to take medicine
 
Onyomi:
薬局(やっきょく)→pharmacy

Origin:

薬 = 艹 + 楽。
艹 is a radical that means grass. 楽 means happy. The medicine is made of grass and when you take medicine, you will feel happy.
So 薬 stands for “medicine”.
 
Note: There is a little difference between Chinese Kanji and Japanese Kanji, please be careful.
