Lesson 4: Negative Form

In this lesson，I will teach you how to convert Japanese verbs to Negative Form.

Verb Type	How to convert?
Type-1 Verb	change the u-hiragana to the a-hiragana in the same column, and add ない in the end. Example: 書かく→書かかない Exception: when the verb is something like ○う（会あう、買かう，you need to change the う to わ，like 会わない、買わない）
Type-2 Verb	change the る in the end to ない Example: 食たべる→食たべない
Type-3 Verb	change the する in the end to しない Example: 勉べん強きょうする→勉べん強きょうしない
Irregular Verb	する→しない来くる→来こない

Note:

Form	How to convert?
Plain Negative Past Tense Form	change ない to なかった Examples: 会あわない→会わなかった食たべない→食べなかった勉べん強きょうしない→勉強しなかった
Polite Negative Past Tense Form	change ます to ませんでした Examples: 会あいます→会いませんでした食たべます→食べませんでした勉べん強きょうします→勉強しませんでした

Exception:

ある is the only exception. Its Negative Form is ない.

彼かれはお金かねがある。
He has money.

彼かれはお金かねがない。
He doesn’t have money.

彼かれはお金かねがなかった。
He didn’t have money.

彼かれはお金かねがありませんでした。
He didn’t have money.

Examples:

会う	あう	会わない
書く	かく	書かない
嗅ぐ	かぐ	嗅がない
押す	おす	押さない
打つ	うつ	打たない
死ぬ	しぬ	死なない
呼ぶ	よぶ	呼ばない
飲む	のむ	飲まない
やる	やる	やらない
食べる	たべる	食べない
勉強する	べんきょうする	勉強しない
する	する	しない
来る	くる	来（こ）ない

Example Sentences:

私わたしは仕し事ごとをしない。
I don’t work.

彼かれはお酒さけを飲のまない。
He doesn’t drink alcohol.

彼女かのじょは野や菜さいを食たべなかった。
She didn’t eat vegetable.

私わたしの友達ともだちは日に本ほん語ごを勉べん強きょうしない。
My friends don’t learn Japanese.

彼かれの母ははは家事かじをしない。
His mother doesn’t do housework.
