Lesson 7: から

In this lesson, I will teach you how to use the particle から.

Function 1: Starting Point

If you want to express the starting point(time/space), you can use something like below.

Starting Point + から

Example Sentences:

私わたしは日本にほんから来きました。
I came from Japan.

彼かれは教きょう室しつから出でました。
He got out of the classroom.

あしたから夏休なつやすみです。
Tomorrow is Summer vacation.

来年らいねんから大学だいがくに行いきます。
I will go to college from next year.

Function 2: The Material

If you want to express the material, you can use something like below.

material + から + Verb

Example Sentences:

日本にほん酒しゅは米こめから作つくられた。
Sake is made from rice.

私わたしたちはぶどうからワインを作つくります。
We make wine from grapes.

これは土つちから作つくられたパイプです。
This is a pipe made of clay.

チーズは牛乳ぎゅうにゅうから作つくられますか？
Can you make cheese from milk?

Function 3: The Giver of Things or Information

If you want to mark the giver of things or information, you can use something like below.

giver + から + Verb

Example Sentences:

田た中なかさんから本ほんをもらいました。
I got a book from Mr. Tanaka.

先生せんせいから質問しつもんを出だしました。
The teacher asked a question.

私わたしから説明せつめいします。
I will explain it.

友達ともだちから電話でんわが来きた。
My friend called me.

Function 4: The Agent in Causative Form and Passive Form

If you want to express the the agent in causative form and passive form, you can use に or から，they are interchangeable.

Example Sentences:

山やま田ださんから本ほんを読よませます。
I will let Yamada read the book.

先生せんせいからほめられました。
I was praised by the teacher.

鈴すず木きさんから説明せつめいさせました。
I let Mr. Suzuki explain this.
