Lesson 3: を

In this lesson, I will teach you how to use the particle を.
The Particle を has three functions.

Function 1: Object Marker

If you want to use transitive verb, an object is a must. And you need to use を to mark the object like below.

Topic + は + Object + を + Transitive Verb

Example Sentences:

彼かれは本ほんを読よんでいます。
He is reading a book.

私わたしはケーキを食たべました。
I ate the cake.

彼女かのじょはゲームをやっています。
She is playing the game.

私わたしたちは英えい語ごを勉べん強きょうしました。
We learned English.

彼かれらはレポートを書かいています。
They are writing the report.

Function 2: The Place that You Pass By

If you want to express that you pass by somewhere, you can use を.

Place + を + Verb

Example Sentences:

夏なつに日本にほんを旅行りょこうしてきました。
I traveled to Japan in summer.

私わたしは道みちを渡わたりました。
I passed by the street.

彼かれは公園こうえんを散さん歩ぽしました。
He took a walk in the park.

鳥とりは空そらを飛とびました。
Birds flew in the sky.

彼女かのじょは運動うんどう場じょうを走はしりました。
She ran on the playground.

Function 3: The Starting Point of Movement（move from a smaller place to a bigger place）

If you want to express that you move from a smaller place to a bigger place, you can use something like below.

Topic + は + Smaller Place + を + Verb

Example Sentences:

私わたしは家いえを出でました。
I left the house.

彼かれは電車でんしゃを降おりました。
He got off the train.

私わたしの友達ともだちは日に本ほんを出でました。
My friend left Japan.

彼女かのじょは学校がっこうを卒そつ業ぎょうしました。
She graduated from school.

彼女かのじょは何なん時じにホテルを出でました？
What time did she check out of the hotel?
