Case particle 9:より

In this lesson, I will teach you how to use the particle より.
Function 1: the base point of comparison

If you want to compare something with the base point, you can use something like below.
Noun + は + Base Point + より + …
Examples:
私は彼より背が高い。 I’m taller than him. 佐藤さんは鈴木さんより年上です。 Sato is older than Suzuki. 彼女は私の妹より年下です。 She is younger than my sister. 私たちは彼らより強いです。 We are stronger than them. このスマホはパソコンより高いです。 This smartphone is more expensive than a computer. |
Function 2: starting point

If you want to express starting point, you can use から or より, より is more formal than から.
Examples:
このプロジェクトは今年より始まる。 This project starts from this year. 白線より中に入らないでください。 Do not go inside the white line. 8時より会議を始めます。 The meeting will start at 8:00. あしたから夏休みです。 Tomorrow is Summer vacation. 来年から大学に行きます。 I will go to college next year. |
Function 3: the material

If you want to express the material of something, you can use から or より, より is more formal than から.

Can から also be used in “Function 2: the starting point of time/space”?
So: このプロジェクトは今年から始はじまる。
Yes, the difference is that から is less formal.
What is the difference between “comparison criterion”, “object of comparison”, and “base point for comparison” (for に, と and より)? Can に, と or より be replaced with each other?
Actually I think I understand the difference between に/と and より: より is used when comparing two things that are UNEQUAL () and に/と when comparing two things that are the same or different (= or =/=). Still, is there any difference between に and と?
Which function? the difference between に and と differs depends on the function
For に it’s function 9: comparison criterion, and for と is function 3: the object of comparison
