Mission 5: Te Form

In this lesson,I will teach you how to convert Japanese verbs to Te Form.


What does Te Form Mean?

Te form means “please xxx”,For example,食たべて means “Please eat”.

Note:
①〜て is not polite enough to use to your superiors (it’s okay to use it to your friends and subordinates), instead, you can use
〜ていただけますか to your superiors.
②There are other usages of Te Form,I will explain them in the grammar lessons.

Type-1 Verb

PatternHow to convert?
○う、○つ、○るchange う/つ/る to  って.

Examples:

会あう→会あって  
(Meaning: to meet)

打うつ→打うって 
  (Meaning: to beat)

やる→やって 
  (Meaning: to do)
○く, ○ぐchange く to いて, change ぐ to  いで.

Examples:

書かく→書かいて 
  (Meaning: to write)

嗅かぐ→嗅かいで 
  (Meaning: to smell)
○ぬ、○ぶ、○むchange ぬ/ぶ/む to  んで.

Examples:

死しぬ→死しんで 
  (Meaning: to die)

呼よぶ→呼よんで 
  (Meaning: to call)

読よむ→読よんで 
  (Meaning: to read)
xx-すchange す to  して.

Examples:

押おす→押おして 
  (Meaning: to press)

話はなす→話はなして  
(Meaning: to talk)

壊こわす→壊こわして  
(Meaning: to break)
行く(the only exception)行いく→行いって 
  (Meaning: to go)

Type-2 Verb & Type-3 Verb & Irregular Verb

Verb TypeHow to convert?
Type-2 VerbChange る to て.

Examples:

食たべる→食たべて 
  (Meaning: to eat)

降おりる→降おりて 
  (Meaning: to get down)

起おきる→起おきて 
  (Meaning: to wake up)
Type-3 VerbChange する to して.

Examples:

勉べん強きょうする→勉べん強きょうして   (Meaning: to learn)

結婚けっこんする→結婚けっこんして   (Meaning: to marry)

連絡れんらくする→連絡れんらくして   (Meaning: to come through)
Irregular Verbする → して 
  (Meaning: to do)

来くる → 来きて 
  (Meaning: to come)

Negative Te Form:

If you want to convert Te Form to Negative Te Form, you can convert the verb to Negative Form, and add で in the end.

Examples:

会あって→会わないで

食たべて→食べないで

勉べん強きょうして→勉強しないで

Polite Te Form:

If you want to convert Te Form to Polite Te Form, you can convert the verb to Polite Form, and change the す in the end to して.

Examples:
会います→会いまして
食べます→食べまして
勉強します→勉強しまして

Example Sentences:

ドアを開あけて。
Please open the door.

お昼ひるを食たべて。
Please have lunch.

数すう学がくを勉べん強きょうして。
Please learn math.

学校がっこうに行いかないで。
Please don’t go to school.

本ほんを読よまないで。
Please don’t read books.
