Lesson 5: This, That, Which one
In this lesson, I will teach you how to say “this”, “that” and “which one” in Japanese.
How to say “This,That,Which one” in Japanese?
Pronoun | Explanation |
これ | これ means 【this】 → things close to the talker but far from the listener |
それ | それ means 【that】 → things close to the listener but far from the talker |
あれ | あれ means 【that】 → things both far from the talker and the listener |
どれ | どれ means 【which one】 → things that you are not sure |
Examples:
これはなんですか。 What’s this? それは私のくるまです。 That is my car. あれは辞書です。 That is a dictionary. どれが好きですか。 Which one do you like? |
Note:
If you are talking to your superior, You can use こちら/そちら/あちら/どちら instead of これ/それ/あれ/どれ, they are more polite.

what is こっち/そっち?
it’s the casual version of こちら、そちら
Could you please explain how this “それ means 【that】 → things close to the listener but far from the talker” works in this example:
それは私の家です。- That is my house.
Isn’t the listener is beside the talker in this situation when talker shows his house?
In this situation, the talker and listener met near from the talker’s house. And then the talker introduced his house to the listener.(the listener’s position is closer than the talker)
Hey Marshall ^_^
Shouldn’t it be like : あれは私の家です? Because the house is far from both speaker and listener.
I changed the example!
I just realized that for things we use どれ、あれ、これ、それ。for people :あちら、どちら、こちら、そちら。
これは私の辞書です
これは私の辞書ではない
それは彼の車です
それは彼女の家ではない
あれは大学生です
私の辞書はここにではありません
彼の車はここにありません
彼女のお母さんはあそこにあります
あそこは彼女の家ではない
Isn’t it 「彼女のお母さんはあそこにいます」? Because the speaker is referring to a person.
hi marshal, is it right if i say like これはビールですか ?
correct!
Thank you for adding notes indicating the polite forms. They are really helpful!
これはあたしの物ですよ~~~~~
それは詩野本さんのですか?
あれは真梨子ちゃんですよ、友達です。
どれは好きなの?
Shouldn’t it be どれが好きなの?
For the “what’s this” sentence why do you use なん instead of なに?Are you allowed to just drop the い sound at the end?
何 has two readings, you use one of them depends on the situation
