Notes:

(1)「ありがとう」is for friends and family, and ありがとうございます is for when you want to be a bit more polite.
Quick tip: use ありがとう」 with friends, and ありがとうございます with people you’d call Mr. or Ms (or strangers).

(2)You can use いいえ to respond to both situations:
it means “you’re welcome” when someone thanks you, and “no, it’s okay” when someone apologizes.
