The na-adjective in Japanese has six core grammatical forms: Negative, Past Tense, Negative Past Form, Te Form, Adverbial Form, and Nominal Form.

WordMeaning
静しずかquiet
好すきlike
下手へたbe not good at
Examples words I will use in this lesson

FormHow to convert
Negative Form【Plain Form】
Add ではない/じゃない in the end.
静しずか→静かではない/静かじゃない
好すき→好きではない/好きじゃない
下手へた→下手ではない/下手じゃない

【Polite Form — often used in daily conversations】
Add ではないです/じゃないです in the end.
静しずか→静かではないです/静かじゃないです

Note:
For the sake of simplicity, the forms below will only use the じゃ~ form. Please note that “じゃ” can always be replaced with “では.” “では” sounds more formal, while “じゃ” is more conversational, so you can choose whichever fits the situation.
Past Tense Form【Plain Form】

静しずか→静かじゃありませんでした
好すき→好きじゃありませんでした
下手へた→下手じゃありませんでした
Te FormAdd で in the end.
Note: Te Form of adjectives has nothing to do with “please”, it’s used in many Japanese grammar rules you will learn in the later grammar lessons.

Examples:
静しずか→静しずかで
好すき→好すきで
下手へた→下手へたで
Adverbial FormAdd に in the end.
静しずか→静しずかに
好すき→好すきに
下手へた→下手へたに

静かに話してください。
Please speak quietly.
shizuka ni hanashite kudasai.
Nominal FormYou don’t need to do anything.

Usually, na-adj that only has two kanji can function as a noun. Such as 安全あんぜん(safe, safety)、危き険けん(risky, risk) . Not all na-adj has nominal form.
