Notes:
| (1)「おはよう」is for friends and family, and 「おはようございます」 is for when you want to be a bit more polite. Quick tip: use 「おはよう」 with friends, and 「おはようございます」 with people you’d call Mr. or Ms. (2)In 「こんにちは」 and 「こんばんは」, the は is read as “wa”, not “ha.” Here’s why: “こんにち” means today (a noun), and “こんばん” means this evening (also a noun). は is a Japanese particle that marks the topic (kind of like the subject—you’ll learn more about particles in the later Particle Course, no worries!). So technically, you could say: こんにち は いかがですか? (How’s your day?) こんばん は いかがですか? (How’s your evening?) But that’s a bit long, so people just say 「こんにちは」 and 「こんばんは」 directly! |
