In this lesson, I will teach you how to describe things in past tense.
Patterns:
| Pattern | Meaning |
| [Noun] + でした | I was [Noun]. It was [Noun]. |
| [Noun] + ではありませんでした | I was not [Noun]. It was not [Noun]. |
| [Noun 1] は [Noun 2] でした | [Noun 1] was [Noun 2]. |
| [Noun 1] は [Noun 2] ではありませんでした | [Noun 1] was not [Noun 2]. |

Was this a hospital?
Koko wa byouin deshita ka.
はい、そうでした。
Yes, it was.
Hai, sou deshita.
デパートではありませんでしたか。
It wasn’t a department store, right?
depaato dewa arimasen deshita ka.
はい。デパートではありませんでした。
Right. It wasn’t a department store.
hai. Depaato dewa arimasen deshita.
Notes:
| ①If you know what Noun 1 is, you may omit “Noun 1は/が”. Especially, it is often omitted in the answer to the question. A: きのうは休みでしたか。 A: Was it a day off yesterday? B: いいえ、休みではありませんでした。 B: No, it was not a day off yesterday. ②Besides 【ではありませんでした】（Very formal）, you can use the following forms too: （1）じゃありませんでした：Polite but conversational （2）ではなかったです：Polite but more conversational （3）ではなかった：Slightly formal, often written or literary style （4）じゃなかったです：Casual, everyday speech （5）じゃなかった：Casual, often male speech ③This lesson is for noun-only, you can learn how to use adjectives in Adjective Course. |

this rule is for Noun is Noun, It’s not very natural to use adj here.

For example:

田中さんは弁護士でした。
Tanaka-san was not a lowyer.

Marshallさん i want to ask, is it right if i say 昨日は働きではありませんでした or 昨日働きではありませんでした？
It’s not wrong but it’s weird. Because when you want to say the verb “to work”, You’d better use 働く， like 昨日は働いていなかった。 If you only want to use noun, you should use 出勤日（しゅっきんび）， it means “The day you go to work”. So it will be 昨日は出勤日ではありませんでした。
東京は晴れた日でした Is It sais Tōkyō wa hareta hideshita?
東京は晴れでした
Is it still possible to say いいえ、きのうは休みではありませんでした as an answer to きのうは休みでしたか.

hello, I don’t understand omitting the wa/ga part in the example provided. mind breaking down the sentence, please? Also, what are ではなかったです and じゃなかったです? Are they different forms of dewanai des and janai des? and is there a sokuon in them?
basically, you can omit the subject if the person you are talking to knows what you are talking about.
ではなかった and じゃなかった is the past tense of ではない and じゃない。
and yes, there is a sokuon in ではなかった and じゃなかった（it’s sokuon っ not the big つ）
