Origin:

You can see a man who is listening to something,so it stands for “to listen”.
And when you listen to the answer, it means that you asked something, so 聞 also stands for “to ask”.

Note: You can see the particle before く to judge the meaning.
For example:
かれいた:I asked him.
かれからいた:I heard from him.

      It’s because in Japanese, people think if someone asked something, the other one should listen to him/her carefully.
      So now this verb has both meanings. I added a note to help you judge the meaning by the particle.
