Meaning

In Japanese,対 means “toward”.

Kunyomi:Not often used
Onyomi:たい

Onyomi:
反対(はんたい)する→to oppose
一対一(いったいいち)→one-on-one

Origin:

You can see that someone is holding the candle.
Long time ago, you need to let the candle toward the book so that you can read books clearly at night.
So 対 means “toward” .

Note: There is some difference between Chinese kanji and Japanese kanji. You should use Japanese kanji.(There is a 文 on the left.)
