Meaning

In Japanese,候 means “to wait”.

How to read it:

Kunyomi:そうろう
Onyomi:こう

Kunyomi:
居候(いそうろう)→freeloader

Onyomi:
候補(こうほ)→candidate

Origin:

The original meaning of 候 is “target”, so you can remember this kanji by “after I shoot something, I need to wait for the arrow to shoot it.”

Note: There is some difference between Chinese kanji and Japanese kanji, you should use Japanese kanji.(Which has a | in the middle.)
