Meaning

In Japanese,効 means “be effective”. 

How to read it:

Onyomi:こう

効(き)く→be effective

Onyomi:
効果(こうか)→effect

Origin:

You can see a man who is crossing his legs.
So he can be effective because he is relaxed this way.
So 効 means “be effective”.

Note: There is some difference between Chinese kanji and Japanese kanji. You should use Japanese kanji, which has a 力 on the right.
