Japanese Adverb Lesson

Meaning:

「段々だんだん」means “steadily”, “gradually”, “more and more(less and less)”.

Examples:

空そらがだんだん曇くもってきた。
The sky has gradually clouded over.

だんだん寒さむくなってきている。
It’s gradually getting colder.

昼ひるがだんだんと長ながくなってきた。
The days are getting longer gradually.

生せい徒との数かずがだんだん減へってきた。
The number of students is dropping gradually.

仕し事ごとがだんだん困難こんなんになってきた。
The work begins to get more difficult gradually.

祖母そぼはだんだん忘わすれっぽくなってきた。
My grandmother was gradually becoming forgetful.

トムは段々だんだんよくなっている。
Tom is getting better steadily.

これから段々だんだん暖あたたかくなって行いくでしょう。
It’s going to get steadily hotter from now.

フィオナの手て紙がみは段々だんだんと頻ひん度どが減へっていった。
Fiona’s letters were becoming less and less frequent.

彼かれは立たち去さって、雪ゆきの中なかで彼かれの姿すがたは段々だんだんと薄うすれていた。
As he walked away, his figure gradually became dim under the snow.

Notes:

① It can be written as 「だんだん」「だんだんと」「段々だんだんと」too. They are the same.
② 々 is a repetition kanji or “ideographic iteration mark”, it means that the kanji just before should be repeated.
