Lesson 4: Ten Thousand

In this lesson, I will teach you ten N5 words: 一万、二万、三万、四万、五万、六万、七万、八万、九万 and 十万.

Pronunciation Patterns:

Unlike Hundreds (百) and Thousands (千), numbers with 万 generally do not undergo sound changes

私の貯金は一万円です。
My savings are ten thousand yen.
Watashi no chokin wa ichiman en desu.

新しい車の価格は二万円でした。
The new car’s price was twenty thousand yen.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

Remember that 四万 uses よん (not し)
No sound changes occur for any 万 numbers

Cultural Note:

The 万 counter is extremely important in Japanese as it’s equivalent to 10,000. Japan uses the 万/億/兆 counting system instead of the Western thousand/million/billion system. This is crucial for understanding prices, salaries, populations, and other large numbers in daily life.
