Lesson 2: Hundred

In this lesson, I will teach you 9 N5 words: 百、二百、三百、四百、五百、六百、七百、八百 and 九百.

Study Notes:

  • Numbers ending with 百 undergo different sound changes:
    • 三百 → さんびゃく (sanbyaku)
    • 六百 → ろっぴゃく (roppyaku)
    • 八百 → はっぴゃく (happyaku)
  • 四百 and 七百 use alternative readings (よん/なな) to avoid unwanted associations

Example Sentences:

この本は百ページあります。
This book has one hundred pages.
Kono hon wa hyaku pēji arimasu.

その時計は二百ドルでした。
That watch was two hundred dollars.
Sono tokei wa nihyaku doru deshita.

会場には三百人が集まりました。
Three hundred people gathered at the venue.
Kaijō ni wa sanbyaku nin ga atsumarimashita.

この都市の人口は四百万人です。
This city’s population is four million people.
Kono toshi no jinkō wa yonhyaku man’nin desu.

このプロジェクトには五百人のボランティアが参加しました。
Five hundred volunteers participated in this project.
Kono purojekuto ni wa gohyaku nin no borantia ga sanka shimashita.

新しいスマートフォンは六百ドルです。
The new smartphone costs six hundred dollars.
Atarashii sumātofon wa roppyaku doru desu.

この図書館には七百冊の古い本があります。
This library has seven hundred old books.
Kono toshokan wa nanahyaku satsu no furui hon ga arimasu.

その競技場には八百人の観客がいました。
There were eight hundred spectators in the stadium.
Sono kyōgijō ni wa happyaku nin no kankyaku ga imashita.

この大学には九百人の学生がいます。
This university has nine hundred students.
Kono daigaku ni wa kyūhyaku nin no gakusei ga imasu.
